Mernin's Court
| This sign is at the top of a hill on the east side of four lane 66 between Sherman and Springfield. | |
| Here is the sign looking west. The road is a tar and chip road that doesn't seem to be covering old concrete. | |
| This is the house at the end of the road. The row of old cabins is on the right side of the picture. Note the "ROW" post near the mailbox. | |
| Sign and cabins. | |
| The row of cabins again... | |
| ...and again. | |
| Crazy road explorer walking down to see another "ROW"post. | |
| "ROW" up close. We saw two of these posts along the road. I'm guessing that the original two-lane was on the other side of the motor court sign, but not as far over as the current four lane road. | |
| Here are a couple of chunks of concrete that could be from old pavement -or not. | |
| We saw a couple of retaining walls made up of large flat slabs of concrete. I wonder where that could have come from.... | |

The "Old 66" tag points to the section of original two lane 66 that stops outside of Sherman where the bridge used to be that crossed the Sangamon River. It's easy to see when you're standing over there that the old bridge crossed at an angle across the position of the new bridge. Along the same line as the road to Mernins Court further north is the ruins of a gas station. The road between the two is gone. The construction of the four lane wiped out all the existing two lane. To the south is a series of frontage roads next to many old business ruins. There are still a few of the old motels in business as "economy" apartments. All the frontage roads are tar and chip so I doubt if any of it covers original pavement. |
