The Road to The Chain of Rocks Bridge
| The Twin Oaks is just before the Canal Bridge on Chain of Rocks Road. This is a picture to the east with the bridge behind us. We turned around here and went back towards {west} the bridge but turned right at the little road just before the bridge. | |
| This is what you find at the bottom of the canal bridge - old pavement! | |
| Before the canal was dug, Old 66 didn't need a bridge here! Here is Old 66 passing under the eastern side bridge footing. | |
| Here is Old 66 on the other side of the canal bridge. You can't see it in the photo so good, but it's evident that the road went straight to the other side before the canal was dug. | |
| This is more Old 66 from the other direction. | |
| There is a very short strip of pavement that connected to the bridge before the canal was dug and the "new" road built. It would be off to the right in this picture and a ways back. We couldn't find it on this trip as it was too wet to stomp around out in the weeds. Thanks again to our tour guide Gary who also showed us cool stuff south of Carlinville. | |
